Business Development

Jeremie Breadfruit Flour and Plant Nursery

In order to support sustainable development, Haitian Connection realizes that business development can play an important role in poverty reduction. To that end we support a young agronomist, Pierre-Moise, a graduate of the University of the Nouvelle Grand’Anse, in developing a local industry to transform breadfruit into breadfruit flour. Breadfruit is plentiful in the Grand’Anse and much liked by the population. We are marketing the flour to local bakeries, and also initiating a cooking school to show people how to use breadfruit flour in a variety of ways.

After hurricane Matthew which destroyed all the trees in the Grand’Anse, we noted the importance of planting trees. With the help of Trees that Feed Foundation we have developed 2 sites for a plant nursery from where we sell tree seedlings to other groups and individuals.

Biosand Filters
biosand filters

Two years ago we sent two graduating UNOGA students for a two week training in the construction of biosand filters. We are launching this social business now. Biosand filters provide clean drinking water and have a lifespan of many years. Access to clean drinking water is a necessity for the Haitian people, especially for families. We are marrying our house construction to this business. Each family that receives a new house will also receive a biosand filter.
