This week marked eleven years since the January 12, 2010 massive earthquake that rocked Haiti, killing over 300,000 people. The earthquake measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale. That moment the world became aware of Haiti. Many were moved to donate goods to Haiti and even more so money came pouring in, over 10 billion Dollars. The question is though, where did the money go? It certainly did not get to the Haitian people, and there is even doubt that the money promised actually was disbursed. Of course corruption is rampant in Haiti as well as among the big NGOs, but can so much be wasted? There have only been few demands for accountability, and that includes the money from the Clinton Foundation. All that can be seen for that money are a few fancy hotels of which one or two have already closed.
Haiti does not ever seem to move forward despite its courageous people and its beautiful landscape. Natural gifts, but often ignored or not appreciated. We need to continue our work, drop by drop we will affect change even if a has been said, ‘we are prophets of a future not our own’.
